A Telling Headline

My own thoughts, for what they are worth, about Go Set a Watchman, its provenance and merit, can be found here. The interesting thing to me is that when the national newspaper of record, the New York Times, published her obituary following her death Friday, the headline makes no reference to it, identifying Harper Lee as the author of To Kill a Mockingbird. Period.

That strikes me as for the best, too.

Strangely, my social media feeds have not been filled with memorials and tributes to her.

Or less strangely and more sadly.

Yes, very few. Berke Breathed had a great note she wrote him when he retired the Opus strip, but I haven't seen much else.

Obituary fatigue? My Twitter feed did have a number of people marking her passing, and also Umberto Eco's.

2016 can stop killing off well-known people any time now.
