Whoopsie!
I had thought the NORAD/Santa story seemed a little like one of those e-mail feel-gooders that goes around, but it came from NPR and a quickie check at Snopes showed it was real. Alas, according to an item at Paleofuture, it isn't.
The story is an interesting one, if you can skip past the snarkiness about the Cold War from someone who may not have even been born when it ended, let alone began.

Happy Birthday To Me!
Or more precisely (and piratically), to me blog. Six years ago today, I posted its first entry, with the title "Why Am I Here?" As a person, I have been asking that question for much longer than six years and am sure I will continue to do so for much longer as well. I am certain that I have at least inspired more people to ask that question about the blog, if nothing else.
The logo, which is a picture I found online of a cat that clearly believes that slaying everything that breathes will not provide enough death to satisfy its anger, has remained mostly the same. My "favorite" post has changed now and again through the years; in recent times as I've scanned through the blog history it's been this one.
For those of you who have tolerated and been amused, informed or entertained by the blog -- or been amused by the fact that I expect anything written here to be amusing, informative or entertaining -- my gratitude. For those of you who were not, please send me a receipt for the amount spent to access the blog and I will pay you back fourfold (which means if you got your internet connection just to read this, you may need more help than I do). And for those of you who are just now coming to the blog, I am very sorry that the contest in which the finder of the secret word earned unbelievable amounts of cash and prizes ended yesterday.

Please Call Back
Thank you for calling Friar's Fires. No one is available to write your blog right now, but we will get back with you as soon as we have nothing much to say. Have a blessed day.

Weary
Someone asked me -- I have no idea why -- what comment I might have regarding Saturday's shootings in Arizona and the debate that has been going on about political rhetoric and such in its aftermath. Just briefly:
1. The word "debate" can't be used legitimately for the lion's share of what's been said about the shootings, nor can the words "think" or "thought" be used legitimately to describe how a number of the opinions being expressed were formed.
2. I'm looking forward to a couple of weeks from now when I can go back and un-hide newsfeeds from a good dozen or so of my Facebook friends who felt the need to post every single stinking thing everyone else said about the matter.
3. In light of the concept expressed in Proverbs 17:28, very few television networks, magazines or newspapers seem to employ men (or women) of understanding.
4. Some days, there's not enough shuttin' up in the world -- and I'll try to live by my own thought and start my shuttin' up now.
ETA: I'll break my own rule by commending President Obama on his remarks yesterday evening. The presidency has hard moments, but I imagine this one -- involving the death of a 9-year-old girl -- is compounded for a man with young daughters, and he stepped up well.

Blessings!
May my first post of 2011 to you, my literally pairs of readers, be one wishing you blessings and one of good cheer.
Chances are good I'll get grumpy again soon, though. Sorry about that.

Yet Another Big Honkin' Lump of Coal...
...to me, to go with the egg on my face for not following the article about Dr. Nathan Grills far enough to find out that the Australian professor was spoofing scientific articles about silly subjects, something I of course hold very dear.
In fact, Dr. Grills plays Santa and he says he does so out of a belief in what he calls:
As one of the people who made fun of your spoofed study, Dr. Grills, I certainly apologize, on the one-in-a-million chance either of my readers ever meets you and mentions my earlier post to you. And the study itself is pretty dadgum funny. It gave me a ho-ho-ho for the day.

...the true meaning of Santa. The true Santa, Saint Nicholas, was a very generous man who gave of all his wealth to bless others who were in need. This was a reflection of one of the greatest gifts given to humanity: the baby Jesus. We need to reclaim Christmas for the beauty of giving and loving.Oh, it gets worse for me yet. In his everyday work, Dr. Grills studies HIV transmission in rural areas of India to see how charities can help victims of the disease in those regions. I feel like I just kicked a puppy...that is, I feel like this his how I would feel if I ever had kicked a puppy, because I am not the kind of person who would do such a thing, although based on how I made fun of this really neat guy you probably shouldn't take my word for that.
